about this site
In March 2000 I started this website as a photo gallery under the domain grapf.de. Three years later, I rededicated the site, following the new technical possibilities, into a photoblog.
In order to my special attention to the street-photography, I renamed it some years later into “déjà rue” with accordingly registered URL.
A photo blog is not a portfolio, that is, I show here not only the probably best or mainstream pictures, but series of pictures in thematically or chronologically (related to the type of a diary) contexts. I call it work on projects.
The daily scum and the special surge of the city have fascinated me as a child when I was pulled by the hand of my grandmother through the dirty, smelly and noisy streets of Hannover-Linden. Influenced by similar sensations are my earliest memories of railway-stations.
Today I find myself always in how I try to recreate those memories and impressions: in pictures I’ve made in recent years in cities. Possibly because a thread is to be sought, which leads from Stockholm via Copenhagen, by Hamburg and Berlin, Leipzig and Dresden, Prague and Nicosia to Paris, and especially Istanbul.
How do we live? How do we want to live? What are our demands and needs of our immediate living environment and where do we regain our immediate desires?
This is not a task to fathom on city tours in tourist buses. You need time, repetition, proximity and contact to the people, a keen mind’s eye. And something like longing for a fulfilled life, a positive utopia.
In this sense!
